UU Ministry for Earth

Green Sanctuary is a Unitarian Universalist program to build awareness of environmental issues in order to promote personal lifestyle changes and community action, particularly toward rectifying environmental injustice. Green Sanctuary also strives to connect spiritual practice and environmental consciousness.  We are the 20th certified Green Sanctuary in the nation.

Projects

          Environmental Projects
We have designed and installed an interpretive nature trail at the Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge and participated in restoration efforts.

          Environmental Justice
We send disadvantaged teens to Wilderness Adventure Camps to experience the beauties and wonders of nature.

          Green Living
We encourage and practice green purchasing, recycling, and efficient energy use at home and in our church through Green Corner articles in the Crossroads newsletter and community presentations.

          Field Trips
We sponsor and participate in local environmental activities such as the Fall Wildlife Festival and the Green Festival. We also visit organic farms, local landfills, power plants, sewage treatment plants, and recycling facilities as family outings.

         Migratory Song Birds
We protect migratory song birds through our sale of shade-grown, fair trade coffees sponsored by the UU Service Committee.
