There is a certain ability that comes to some people to be able to live amidst great darkness and never lose sight of the light. It is seen when those who face the same fears and disappointments and loss look into the face of the world and still reflect beauty. The Dali Llama, Amma, Thomas Merton, Rumi and others who reached enlightenment, did not force a half-hearted smile in response to broken people and a broken world. What made their response possible? How can it be possible for us?
